In the rapidly growing renewable energy sector, there has been a shift from centralized to distributed energy trading. To facilitate this transition, blockchain technology has been widely adopted as a distributed public ledger. However, there are several challenges associated with blockchain-based energy trading, including low efficiency, high transaction costs and security and privacy issues. In response to these challenges, various solutions have been proposed. This survey thoroughly investigates the use of blockchain in energy trading within electrical power systems. Firstly, it identifies the challenges specific to blockchain-based energy trading and then examines existing energy trading schemes and categorizes them into three main focuses: energy transaction, consensus mechanism and system optimization. Each category is presented in detail. While existing schemes can meet specific energy trading requirements, there are still many unresolved problems in this field. The survey concludes with a discussion on these issues and provides future directions for research and development. The authors of this study include Naiyu Wang, Xiao Zhou, Xin Lu, Zhitao Guan, Longfei Wu, Xiaojiang Du and Mohsen Guizani. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the current state of blockchain-based energy trading and highlights areas for further improvement and innovation.

The renewable energy sector is changing how it trades energy, moving from one big system to many smaller ones. Blockchain technology, which is like a special kind of computer program, is being used a lot for this change. But there are some problems with using blockchain for energy trading, like it not working very well and costing a lot of money. People have come up with different ideas to fix these problems. A survey looked at how people use blockchain in energy trading and found some challenges that need to be solved. The survey also looked at different ways people trade energy and found that they can work for some things but not everything. The authors of the study are Naiyu Wang, Xiao Zhou, Xin Lu, Zhitao Guan, Longfei Wu, Xiaojiang Du, Mohsen Guizani."

Exploring the Use of Blockchain in Energy Trading
The renewable energy sector is rapidly growing, and with it has come a shift from centralized to distributed energy trading. To facilitate this transition, blockchain technology has been widely adopted as a distributed public ledger. However, there are several challenges associated with blockchain-based energy trading, including low efficiency, high transaction costs and security and privacy issues. In response to these challenges, various solutions have been proposed.
In this survey paper by Naiyu Wang et al., the authors explore the use of blockchain in energy trading within electrical power systems. The paper identifies the challenges specific to blockchain-based energy trading and then examines existing energy trading schemes and categorizes them into three main focuses: energy transaction, consensus mechanism and system optimization. Each category is presented in detail.
Energy Transaction
The first focus of this survey is on how blockchain can be used for efficient energy transactions between buyers and sellers in an electricity market. The authors discuss existing approaches such as smart contracts which enable automated transactions based on pre-defined conditions without any third party involvement or trust requirements between parties involved in the transaction process. They also examine other methods such as peer-to-peer (P2P) networks that allow direct interactions between buyers and sellers while providing secure data exchange through encryption techniques like hash functions or digital signatures.
Consensus Mechanism
The second focus of this survey is on consensus mechanisms that are necessary for successful execution of transactions within a distributed network environment where multiple nodes need to agree upon certain rules before executing any action or decision related to an ongoing transaction process. This includes proof-of-work (PoW), proof-of-stake (PoS) algorithms which are commonly used for validating transactions within a decentralized network environment while ensuring security against malicious attacks from outside sources or internal errors due to faulty nodes present in the network system architecture design itself . Additionally , they discuss other consensus protocols such as Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) which provides better fault tolerance compared to PoW/PoS but requires more computational resources than traditional consensus mechanisms .
System Optimization
The third focus of this survey is on system optimization techniques that can be employed when using blockchains for managing large scale electricity markets with hundreds or thousands of participants involved at any given time . These include methods such as game theory based strategies , auctioning algorithms , demand side management techniques etcetera which help optimize overall performance by reducing wastage while maximizing profits for all stakeholders involved .
Conclusion & Future Directions
While existing schemes can meet specific energy trading requirements , there are still many unresolved problems in this field . The survey concludes with a discussion on these issues and provides future directions for research and development . Some potential areas include improving scalability by introducing sharding technologies , enhancing privacy protection measures through zero knowledge proofs etcetera along with further exploration into novel consensus mechanisms like delegated proof -of - stake (DPoS ) algorithms etcetera . Overall , this study provides valuable insights into the current state of blockchain - based energy trading and highlights areas for further improvement & innovation .
