The paper titled "SelectVisAR: Selective Visualisation of Virtual Environments in Augmented Reality" by Robbe Cools, Jihae Han, and Adalberto L. Simeone explores the concept of establishing a visual connection between virtual reality (VR) users and augmented reality (AR) users. To address the issue of information overload faced by AR users compared to VR users, the authors propose SelectVisAR - a selective visualization system for virtual environments in AR. This system allows an AR spectator to perceive a co-located VR user in four distinct visualization conditions: Interactive, Proximity, Everything, and Dollhouse. Additionally, they conduct a follow-up study exploring two additional conditions: Context and Spotlight. The design of SelectVisAR adopts a human-centric approach to information filtering by selectively visualizing only parts of the virtual environment that are relevant to the interactive possibilities of the VR user. The research aims to investigate how selective visualizations can be beneficial or trivial for AR users when observing VR users. In the follow-up study with 13 participants with low self-reported experience in VR and AR, results showed that Spotlight ranked significantly lower than other techniques while Dollhouse was also ranked significantly lower than Everything. Context was ranked highly by participants suggesting that some visualization techniques may not be preferred by AR users when observing VR users. In conclusion, this paper introduces SelectVisAR as a solution for selective visualization in AR environments when connecting with VR users. The research provides insights into which visualization conditions are preferred by AR spectators and highlights the importance of considering the information needs of AR users in mixed reality scenarios.

The paper is about connecting virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) users together. They propose a system called SelectVisAR that helps people see certain parts of the virtual world in AR. There are four different ways to visualize the virtual world: Interactive, Proximity, Everything, and Dollhouse. They did another study with two more visualization techniques called Context and Spotlight. The results showed that Spotlight and Dollhouse were not liked as much as the other techniques. Context was ranked highly by the participants. SelectVisAR is a solution for showing only important parts of the virtual world in AR when connected to VR users. It's important to think about what information AR users need in mixed reality situations.
Definitions- Visual connection: being able to see or communicate with someone using your eyes or technology
- Virtual reality (VR): a computer-generated environment that you can explore and interact with using special equipment like goggles
- Augmented reality (AR): technology that adds digital elements to what you see in the real world
- Visualization: creating images or graphics to help understand something better
- Interactive: being able to do things and have an effect on something
- Proximity: being close together or near each other
- Dollhouse: a way of visualizing something like a small model house
- Context: considering the situation or background information
SelectVisAR: Selective Visualisation of Virtual Environments in Augmented Reality
Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are two rapidly growing technologies that have seen a surge in popularity over the past few years. While both offer immersive experiences, AR and VR differ significantly when it comes to the amount of information available to users. AR users often face an overload of information compared to VR users, leading researchers to explore ways to bridge this gap by selectively visualizing only parts of the virtual environment relevant for interaction between AR and VR users.
In this paper, Robbe Cools, Jihae Han, and Adalberto L. Simeone propose SelectVisAR - a selective visualization system for virtual environments in AR - as a solution for bridging the gap between these two technologies. The authors conducted two studies with 13 participants with low self-reported experience in both VR and AR to investigate how selective visualizations can be beneficial or trivial for AR spectators when observing VR users.
The Design of SelectVisAR
The design of SelectVisAR adopts a human-centric approach to information filtering by selectively visualizing only parts of the virtual environment that are relevant to the interactive possibilities of the VR user. It allows an AR spectator to perceive a co-located VR user in four distinct visualization conditions: Interactive, Proximity, Everything, and Dollhouse. Additionally, they conduct a follow-up study exploring two additional conditions: Context and Spotlight.
In Interactive mode, all objects within reachable distance from the avatar are displayed while Proximity mode displays objects within close proximity from each other such as furniture or tools used by the avatar during their task execution process. Everything mode shows all objects present in the scene regardless if they are being interacted with or not while Dollhouse is similar but instead gives an overview view from above like looking at a doll house model where all objects appear much smaller than normal size relative to each other’s position in space . Context mode focuses on displaying only those elements which provide context about what is happening around them such as walls or flooring while Spotlight highlights certain elements based on their relevance such as highlighting tools used by avatars during tasks execution processes..
Results & Conclusions
The results showed that Spotlight ranked significantly lower than other techniques while Dollhouse was also ranked significantly lower than Everything condition suggesting some visualization techniques may not be preferred by AR spectators when observing VR users. On the contrary Context was ranked highly indicating that providing contextual information about what is happening around them may be more beneficial for understanding interactions between different avatars better .
In conclusion , this paper introduces SelectVisAR as a solution for selective visualization in mixed reality scenarios connecting with VR users . The research provides insights into which visualization conditions are preferred by AR spectators thus highlighting importance considering needs of both parties involved when designing systems combining these technologies together .
