Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is a way to understand and study how people move and do things. It can be used in different areas like healthcare or sports.
Before, there were some problems with using computers to recognize human activity, like privacy issues or not being able to see clearly because of obstacles.
Now, people are using special sensors called inertial sensors to help with recognizing human activity. These sensors can be found in smartphones.
Scientists have been studying different ways to use Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) with the sensor data from smartphones to recognize human activity.
The study also talks about what other scientists have done before and the dataset they used for their experiments. They trained machine learning classifiers to categorize activities based on sensor data.
Finally, they compared all the models they created and talked about which one worked best. They also discussed what this means for future research in recognizing human activity using inertial sensor data."
Introduction to Human Activity Recognition (HAR)
Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is a rapidly evolving field of research with applications in various domains such as medical support, sports, fitness, social networking, human-computer interfaces, senior care, entertainment and surveillance. Traditionally computer vision methods were used for HAR but they had several limitations including privacy concerns, environmental influences, limited mobility and high costs. However a new trend has emerged in the use of sensors particularly inertial sensors which are more accurate and efficient than traditional methods.

The paper is structured into several sections: Section II provides a review of related work in the field of HAR; Section III focuses on the dataset used for experimentation; Section IV delves into details about the Machine Learning classifiers trained for activity categorization; Section V compares results obtained from all models trained in this study; and finally Section VI concludes by summarizing findings and discussing implications for future research.
Section II – Related Work Review
In this section authors provide an overview of related work done by other researchers in the field of HAR. For example Imran et al presented a novel convolutional neural network model with inception-like multi-sized kernel models that achieved 89.44% accuracy on UCI-HAR/SMARTPHONE dataset while Mehmood et al used convolutional neural network on smartphone data achieving 91.61% accuracy .
Section III – Dataset Used
The authors utilized UCI-HAR/SMARTPHONE dataset that has been widely used in HAR research for activity categorization using sensor data . This dataset contains accelerometer readings from 30 participants performing 6 activities such as walking , running , sitting etc . It also includes gyroscope readings along with labels indicating type of activity being performed at any given time .
Section IV – Machine Learning Classifiers
In this section details about machine learning classifiers employed are discussed here . Specifically algorithms like Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (RF), k Nearest Neighbors(kNN), Naive Bayes(NB) were tested along with deep learning architectures like Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN). Each algorithm was evaluated based on its performance metrics such as accuracy , precision , recall etc .
Section V – Results Comparison
This section compares results obtained from all models trained in this study based on their performance metrics such as accuracy , precision , recall etc . After testing each algorithm it was found that CNN outperformed all other algorithms achieving highest accuracy score among them i.e 96%.
