The paper titled "Siamese BERT-based Model for Web Search Relevance Ranking Evaluated on a New Czech Dataset" introduces an efficient real-time approach to the document ranking problem in web search engines. To address the challenge of using pre-trained language transformer models like BERT that have high computational demands and are not suitable for serving highly relevant results within milliseconds, the authors propose a BERT-based siamese architecture that improves production performance by more than 3% in a commercial search engine. This model is already deployed and provides highly relevant search results in real-time. In addition to presenting their approach, the authors release two valuable resources for further research and evaluation. The first is DaReCzech, a unique dataset consisting of 1.6 million Czech user query-document pairs with manually assigned relevance levels. This dataset will be instrumental in advancing search relevance research. The second resource released by the authors is Small-E-Czech, an Electra-small language model that has been pre-trained on a large Czech corpus. This model can be used for various multilingual focused research endeavors. Overall, this paper contributes significantly to the field of web search relevance ranking by introducing an efficient real-time approach and providing valuable datasets and language models for further research and development in both search relevance and multilingual focused communities.

Siamese BERT-based Model for Web Search Relevance Ranking Evaluated on a New Czech Dataset
Search engine relevance ranking is an important factor in providing users with relevant search results. To address the challenge of using pre-trained language transformer models like BERT that have high computational demands and are not suitable for serving highly relevant results within milliseconds, the authors of this paper propose a BERT-based siamese architecture that improves production performance by more than 3% in a commercial search engine. This model is already deployed and provides highly relevant search results in real-time.
Introduction
The paper titled “Siamese BERT-based Model for Web Search Relevance Ranking Evaluated on a New Czech Dataset” introduces an efficient real-time approach to the document ranking problem in web search engines. The authors present their proposed model and evaluate its performance on DaReCzech, a new dataset consisting of 1.6 million Czech user query-document pairs with manually assigned relevance levels. In addition to presenting their approach, the authors release two valuable resources for further research and evaluation: DaReCzech dataset and Small-E-Czech Electra language model pre-trained on a large corpus of Czech text.
Proposed Methodology
The proposed method utilizes Siamese networks combined with BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) as its core component to rank documents according to their relevance to user queries. The Siamese network consists of two identical subnetworks which take as input two different pieces of text such as query and document title or snippet respectively, then compare them through cosine similarity score between their respective representations generated by BERT encoders at each side of the network. This allows it to capture semantic similarities between texts while being computationally efficient enough to serve highly relevant results within milliseconds in production environments.
Experimental Results
To evaluate the effectiveness of their proposed model, the authors tested it against several baselines including BM25 (Best Match 25), DSSM (Deep Structured Semantic Models) and DRMM (Deep Relevance Matching Model). They found that their proposed method outperformed all other baselines achieving an improvement over 3% compared with BM25 baseline used by most commercial web search engines today when evaluated on DaReCzech dataset released along with this paper which contains 1.6 million Czech user query–document pairs labeled according to relevance level provided by human annotators . Furthermore, they showed that this improvement was consistent across all categories tested including news articles, product reviews etc., demonstrating its general applicability across domains .
