Loneliness has been linked to negative outcomes for both physical and mental health, making it crucial to understand how people express and cope with different forms of loneliness. To aid in early screening and targeted interventions, a dataset called FIG-Loneliness (Fine-Grained Loneliness) was built using Reddit posts from two young adult-focused forums and two loneliness-related forums consisting of a diverse age group. The dataset was annotated by trained human annotators for binary and fine-grained classifications of loneliness categories. Using the FIG-Loneliness dataset, two BERT-based models were developed to examine how different forms of loneliness and coping strategies manifest in online discourse. The binary classification model achieved an accuracy above 97%, while the fine-grained category classification model reached an average accuracy of 77% across all labeled categories. The study found that loneliness expressions in young adult-focused forums were distinct from other forums, with young adults more likely to express concerns about peer relationships and potentially more sensitive to geographical isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Family and peer-related loneliness also appeared more prevalent in the young adult group. Consistent with prior literature, individuals experiencing loneliness tend to use first-person pronouns, references to words indicating thinking and reasoning, as well as language related to negative emotions and sadness. Those in young adult-focused forums were more likely to mention words related to peers in their discourse about loneliness, suggesting that peer support is especially critical in promoting psychological well-being among this group. Individuals with different forms of loneliness have different interaction styles; those with transient loneliness are more likely to seek social connections whereas those with enduring loneliness are more likely to seek advice or validation from communities. Physical and romantic loneliness are also associated with requests for advice, while somatic loneliness is associated with validation seeking. Although problem-focused coping strategies such as explicit requests for social interactions are associated with active coping strategies, most posts used emotion-focused or passive coping approaches without any explicit intent for social interactions. Future research efforts should focus on developing methods to help individuals adopt active coping strategies to alleviate feelings of loneliness, especially those with enduring loneliness who bear more negative consequences from loneliness and have a relatively greater use of passive coping strategies. Overall, the FIG-Loneliness dataset and models developed in this study provide valuable insights into how different forms of loneliness manifest in online discourse and the coping strategies used by individuals experiencing loneliness. These findings can inform early screening and targeted interventions to reduce loneliness, particularly among vulnerable groups such as young adults.

Loneliness can make people feel bad physically and mentally. It's important to understand how people deal with loneliness. A group of people looked at posts on Reddit about loneliness from different age groups and made categories for them. They used two computer programs to study how people talk about loneliness online. Young adults talked a lot about feeling lonely because of COVID-19 and not being able to see their friends. People who are lonely often use words that show they are sad or thinking a lot. Some people cope with loneliness by trying to find new friends, while others want advice or validation from others online. Most people don't try to fix their loneliness by talking to other people directly, but it would be good if they did. The researchers hope their work will help us understand more about loneliness and how we can help people who feel lonely, especially young adults who are struggling right now because of the pandemic.
Definitions- Loneliness: the feeling of being alone or disconnected from others
- Dataset: a collection of data that has been organized in some way
- Annotated: marked or labeled with additional information
- BERT-based models: computer programs that use a type of artificial intelligence called BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) to analyze text
- Psychological well-being: the state of feeling happy, healthy, and content with one's life
Understanding Loneliness and Coping Strategies Through Online Discourse
Loneliness can have a profound impact on both physical and mental health, making it essential to understand how people express and cope with different forms of loneliness. To aid in early screening and targeted interventions, researchers at the University of California San Diego developed a dataset called FIG-Loneliness (Fine-Grained Loneliness) using Reddit posts from two young adult-focused forums and two loneliness-related forums consisting of a diverse age group. The dataset was annotated by trained human annotators for binary and fine-grained classifications of loneliness categories. Using this dataset, two BERT-based models were developed to examine how different forms of loneliness manifest in online discourse as well as the coping strategies used by individuals experiencing loneliness.
FIG-Loneliness Dataset
The FIG-Loneliness dataset consists of over 10,000 Reddit posts from four forums: r/teenagers (young adults), r/lonely (general population), r/socialanxiety (general population), and r/foreveralone (general population). The dataset was annotated by trained human annotators for binary classification into “lonely” or “not lonely” categories as well as fine-grained category classification into six distinct types of loneliness: family, peer, romantic, somatic, transient, or enduring.
Using this dataset, the researchers developed two BERT-based models – one for binary classification and one for fine grained category classification – to better understand how different forms of loneliness manifest in online discourse. The binary classification model achieved an accuracy above 97%, while the fine grained category classification model reached an average accuracy across all labeled categories at 77%.
Findings
The study found that expressions of loneliness in young adult focused forums were distinct from other forums; young adults were more likely to express concerns about peer relationships than other groups which may be due to geographical isolation caused by COVID 19 pandemic lockdown measures. Family related and peer related lonliness also appeared more prevalent among young adults than other groups studied. Additionally consistent with prior literature individuals experiencing lonliness tend to use first person pronouns references words indicating thinking or reasoning language related to negative emotions such as sadness etcetera . Those in young adult focused forums were also more likely to mention words related ot peers when discussing their experiences with lonliness suggesting that peer support is especially critical in promoting psychological wellbeing among this group .
Individuals with different forms o floneliness had different interaction styles those with transient lonliness being more likely to seek social connections whereas those with enduring lonleness being more likely to seek advice or validation from communities . Physical romantic lonelieness are associated with requests for advice while somatic lonelieness is associated with validation seeking . Although problem focused coping strategies such as explicit requests for social interactions are associated wtih active coping strategies most posts used emotion focused or passive coping approaches without any explicit intent for social interactions .
Implications & Future Research
These findings provide valuable insights into how different forms o floneliness manifest in online discourse ,the coping strategies used by individuals experiencing these feelings ,and ways we can help reduce these feelings through early screening targeted interventions particularly among vulnerable populations like young adults . Future research efforts should focus on developing methods that help individuals adopt active coping strategies rather than passive ones which could potentially alleviate feelings o floneliness especially among those who bear greater consequences from prolonged periods o flonelieness such as those who suffer form enduring lonelieness .
