## Summary

Smart farming is an innovative approach in the agriculture sector that utilizes advanced technologies to enhance agricultural yield. By incorporating smarter, automated, and data-driven farm processes that interact with Internet of Things (IoT) devices deployed on farms, smart farming has the potential to revolutionize the industry. To effectively execute IoT applications in smart farming, a cloud-fog infrastructure is employed. The cloud-fog infrastructure provides a robust platform for executing IoT applications by combining fog computing and cloud computing. Fog computing addresses the real-time processing requirements of delay-sensitive IoT services by bringing virtualized services closer to the IoT devices. On the other hand, cloud computing enables the execution of applications with higher computational demands. However, deploying IoT applications in this complex infrastructure poses significant challenges. One major challenge is the variation in resource availability between cloud and fog nodes, as well as their different cost models. Additionally, the diverse resource requirements, quality of service (QoS) expectations, and security constraints of IoT applications further complicate the deployment process. In order to address these challenges, this paper proposes a model for optimizing IoT application placement in the cloud-fog infrastructure. The optimization problem aims to minimize costs while satisfying QoS and security constraints. The problem is formulated using Integer Linear Programming (ILP), which allows for efficient allocation of resources based on specific criteria. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model, a small-scale scenario is considered. The evaluation demonstrates how QoS and security requirements impact costs in IoT application placement. Furthermore, the study explores the effects of relaxing security constraints on placement decisions. By considering these factors and utilizing ILP modeling techniques, it becomes possible to make informed decisions regarding resource allocation and application placement in smart farming systems. In conclusion, this paper presents a comprehensive approach to optimize IoT application placement in cloud-fog infrastructure for smart farming. By considering cost efficiency along with QoS and security requirements, this model offers valuable insights into effective resource allocation strategies.
