## Summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most revolutionary developments in scientific history, with transformative impacts on various fields such as medicine, biology, transportation, and entertainment. As AI continues to rapidly change our daily lives, it is crucial to prepare our society for an AI-driven future. One critical step towards this goal is ensuring an AI-ready workforce through education. Advocates of introducing AI basics at the K-12 level emphasize the benefits to the workforce, economy, and national security. However, it is important to recognize that learning AI also offers significant advantages in terms of motivating students and promoting creative thinking. By incorporating AI into education, students can develop a deeper understanding of how their learning relates to real-world applications. To optimize learning outcomes in K-12 AI education, a module-based approach can be implemented. This approach allows teachers to allocate time according to each module's requirements and provides flexibility for customization based on individual classroom needs. The modules typically consist of four parts: a review of background material related to the problem presented by the module; collection and exploration of relevant datasets through data visualization and feature engineering; design and training of an AI model or experimentation with existing models using the collected data; and application of the AI model to real-world situations for tangible results. An example module developed for a math or environmental science class involves students creating their own weather forecast model. They retrieve data from the National Weather Service for their area and select variables and AI algorithms based on their desired predictions (e.g., qualitative weather forecast or exact amount of snow). This hands-on project allows students to integrate their knowledge across disciplines while fostering creativity. In January 2021, the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act was passed as part of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act. This act includes provisions for developing AI curricula at the K-12 level through competitive grants provided by the National Science Foundation. With increasing attention from legislators and recognition of the importance of AI education, it is crucial to excite and engage more members of the education community to join efforts in advancing K-12 AI education in the USA and worldwide. Overall, AI education offers not only long-term societal benefits but also immediate advantages for students by making their learning relevant, applicable, and creative. By implementing module-based approaches, educators can effectively integrate AI into existing curricula and empower students to become proficient in this rapidly evolving field.
