## Summary

In the field of 3D medical image analysis, plays a crucial role in delineating different semantic regions within the images. have shown significant advancements in this area, but they often rely on large-scale annotated data for optimal performance, which can be costly and difficult to obtain. To overcome this challenge, previous research has utilized or dedicated pretraining-finetuning stages to learn representative features. However, the disparity between source and target domains can hinder the ability to learn optimal representations for volumetric data, while multi-stage training requires higher computational resources and careful design choices. In response to these limitations, a universal training framework called has been proposed by authors Hanan Gani, Muzammal Naseer, Fahad Khan, and Salman Khan. This framework is architecture-agnostic and can be seamlessly integrated into existing training frameworks for 3D medical segmentation. MedContext effectively learns self-supervised contextual cues in conjunction with the supervised voxel segmentation task without the need for extensive annotated data or dedicated pretraining-finetuning stages. The key innovation of MedContext lies in its ability to induce contextual knowledge within the network by learning to reconstruct missing organs or parts of organs in the output segmentation space. The effectiveness of this approach has been validated across multiple 3D medical datasets and four state-of-the-art model architectures. Notably, MedContext demonstrates consistent improvements in segmentation performance across various datasets and architectures, even in scenarios with limited available data. This research work has been accepted at MICCAI 2024 and showcases a promising avenue for enhancing volumetric medical segmentation through efficient utilization of contextual cues. The code implementation and pretrained models for MedContext are publicly available at https://github.com/hananshafi/MedContext for further exploration and application in the field of 3D medical image analysis.
