## Summary

This study published in the Journal of Political Economy examines the performance of a volatility-based strategy using Chinese equity index ETF options. The initial success of the strategy was followed by a decline in effectiveness post-2018. To address this, GARCH models for volatility forecasting were integrated into the strategy to dynamically adjust positions and exposures. The results suggest that incorporating such an approach can enhance returns in volatile markets, highlighting potential for refined trading strategies within China's evolving derivatives landscape. The research emphasizes the importance of adaptive strategies in capturing market opportunities amidst changing trading dynamics. By introducing a smoothing module to the strategy and optimizing positions based on historical data, risks were mitigated when volatility values remained consistently negative or positive for more than three days. However, the study also identified shortcomings in the model's sensitivity to small fluctuations and its ability to immediately adjust positions based on current information. Despite these challenges, it was concluded that while a simple short-volatility strategy may have performed well before 2018, improvements through volatility forecasting models like GARCH could lead to better performance in recent years with increased market uncertainty. Overall, this study highlights the potential benefits of adapting trading strategies based on volatility forecasts and adjusting positions accordingly. While there is room for improvement in extreme market conditions, such as highly volatile or depressed markets, the findings suggest that refining trading strategies with advanced forecasting models can lead to more attractive returns compared to traditional buy-and-hold approaches.
