## Summary

In response to the increasing prevalence of online learning, there is a persistent challenge in adapting education to diverse learner needs. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), offer promising tools and capabilities to enhance personalized learning experiences in online educational environments. This work focuses on exploring how LLMs can be leveraged to cater to individual user needs, ultimately improving the overall quality of online education. To achieve this goal, personalization guidelines have been designed based on existing literature on personalized learning. These guidelines serve as the foundation for LLMs to generate tailored learning plans that meet the unique requirements of each learner. As part of this initiative, LearnMate, an LLM-based system, has been implemented to provide users with personalized learning plans and real-time support. Looking ahead, future efforts will concentrate on enhancing the system's interactivity and usability by introducing intuitive features that align with users' natural learning behaviors. For instance, interactive quizzes, homework assistance, and reflection activities will be integrated into the system to strengthen social interaction features and improve companionship among learners. Usability enhancements will include timestamp-based features guiding users to relevant lecture segments based on their questions, generating notes and visual summaries of learning progress, and introducing visual cues for efficient content navigation. Moreover, efforts will be made to strengthen the system's handling of prerequisite relationships between concepts during personalized plan generation. This enhancement aims to ensure that critical knowledge dependencies are maintained as learning paths are customized according to individual preferences. Comprehensive evaluations of the system's design and implementation will be conducted to gain insights into user needs and refine the system accordingly. The long-term vision includes deploying the system across various learning scenarios such as adult skill acquisition, remote educational support for children with limited resources, and supplemental coursework assistance for college students. Additionally, there is potential for the system to serve as a valuable tool for self-guided learners using platforms like YouTube. To maximize accessibility and impact, efforts will focus on developing the system as a flexible plugin that can be seamlessly integrated with existing online learning platforms such as Khan Academy, MOOCs, and YouTube tutorials. This approach aims to provide personalized learning support within familiar environments while reducing barriers to adoption and ensuring diverse learners benefit from tailored educational assistance. Ultimately, these initiatives aim at creating a more accessible, adaptive, and user-centered online learning experience that caters effectively to individual learner needs.
