Permanent magnet motors, such as Brushless DC (BLDC) motors, are widely adopted in today’s industry for their high power density, torque-to-weight ratio, and uncomplicated design. Furthermore, electrical motor drive systems are increasingly adopting (position) sensorless control methods. Sensorless techniques have several advantages over sensor-based methods, including enhanced reliability, prolonged motor lifespans, simplified inverter-motor connections, and lower costs. Several sensorless techniques have been proposed over the past few decades, such as methods based on terminal voltage measurement, third harmonic back electromotive force (back-EMF) signals, and estimation methods. Research in recent years has focused on improving conventional sensorless methods and developing new ones, including those based on flux linkage functions and neural networks. These advancements address challenges associated with high-speed BLDC drives where the phase lag of the LPF is significant, tackle issues in very low-speed applications where back-EMF signal amplitudes are low, improve position estimation speed to enable one-cycle estimation, enhance control system accuracy for BLDC motors with nonideal back-EMFs, and consider asymmetric back-EMF signals. This paper examines the benefits, limitations, and challenges of sensorless drives for BLDC motors, alongside innovative solutions for nonideal and asymmetric back-EMF issues, with an eye toward future developments.

This paper presents a brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive with direct torque control (DTC).The detailed hardware and software design are analyzed and designed. The performance of the BLDC employing DTC is compared with that of BLDC utilizing PWM current control. A prototype of BLDC motor drive based on the DSP controller with DTC control is implemented and validated by the exhibition of waveforms measurement for currents, torque, flux linkage, and speed. The experimental results not only verify the feasibility of designed system but also demonstrate that BLDC with DTC control has superior characteristics than that with PWM current control.

In automotive applications brushed DC motor is often used because of its simplicity and low price. It is very quiet motor, easy to control and serves as actuators with an overall short operating time. Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have less wear and probability of failure, higher efficiency, but need a more complex control algorithm than a DC motor drive. So brushless DC motor is most suitable for applications demanding long-term continuous duty like fuel pumps. Brushed DC motor is often used also in seat ventilation and in some HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) compressors and blowers where low noise operation is required. There is an effort to replace this brushed DC motor with low-cost BLDC motor. But problem of these low-cost BLDC motors is in produced torque ripple, vibrations and acoustic noise. Therefore, sources of torque ripple and their suppression has to be identified. This article will be focused on identification of main sources of torque ripple caused by construction and control of BLDC motor. Sources such as cogging torque, waveform of Back-EMF in combination with waveform of phase currents (type of control technique), dead-time and commutation of currents will be investigated. Impact of these sources will be identified on real BLDC motor and also torque ripple, vibrations and acoustic noise will be evaluated in this article.

This paper presents design of Brushless DC motor (BLDC) driver for electrical. The drive system includes converter to produce the required voltage for BLDC.Hall Effect sensor is needed to decide on the position of the permanent magnet to match it with the right BLDC coil. The Hall Effect sensors are displaced by 120 o which will produce voltage signals on the output displaces by the same phase shift. The generation of converter switching signals depends on the signals supplied by Hall Effect sensor for synchronization.Simulink software is used to verify the design validity by running several tests on the system operation. The simulation result is shown to validity verification.

This paper presents nature-inspired optimization algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and bat algorithm (BA) for tuning PID controller parameters of BLDC motor drive. Both PSO algorithm BA are population based algorithms.Population based algorithms have number of advantages over classical methods for solving complex optimization problems. The position of BLDC rotor is determined by measuring the changes in the Back emf.Sensorless control method reduces the cost of motor as it does not need sensors for the detection of rotor position. The BLDC motor drive is modelled in Matlab/simullink.The simulation results reveals that proposed methods are effective in reducing the time domain parameters steady state error, rise time, settling time and peak overshoot.

This article presents a BLDC (permanent magnet brushless DC) motor drive for marine electric vehicle (MEV) application. The presented scheme uses bridgeless canonical cell (BL-CC) converter with center-tapped inductor (shown as two separate inductors for analysis purpose) for source-side power factor correction (PFC); however, the BL-CC converter requires two inductors. In the presented scheme use of one center-tapped inductor eliminates the requirement of one extra inductor. Thus, center-tapped inductor usage in BLDC motor drive results in decrement in components count. The BL-CC converter-based BLDC motor drive scheme do not require extra back-feeding diodes like other bridgeless (BL) schemes, but it uses inbuilt antiparallel diodes of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switches for the same purpose this again leads to decrement in required component count. In this work, PFC BL-CC converter is operated in discontinuous inductor current (DIC) mode to attain better power quality. The DIC mode operation requires only one voltage sensor to sense DC-link voltage, whereas in continuous conduction mode (CCM), the sensor requirement increases to three (two voltage sensors and one current sensor). The PFC BL-CC converter also eliminates the diode bridge rectifier stage. The elimination of one extra inductor, two extra back-feeding diodes, DBR stage and also requirement of only one voltage sensor in DIC mode operation instead of three sensors for CCM implies reduction in components count which implies the reduction in cost and also the volume and weight of the BLDC motor drive. The weight reduction for marine (on-board) electric vehicle is very important as this enhances the vehicle performance. This paper also presents the detailed mathematical modeling and stability analysis of presented BL-CC converter using pole zero map and Bode plot. The BL-CC converter-based BLDC motor driving system for MEV application for DIC mode operation has been developed in the laboratory as well as on MATLAB/Simulink platform and simulated MATLAB and real-time experimental results have been presented to validate the presented BLDC motor drive under steady-state and dynamic operating conditions.

In the BLDC motor-drive system, the leakage current from a motor to a ground network and existence of high-frequency components of the DC link current are the most important factors that cause conducting interference. The leakage currents of the motors, flow through common ground, will interfere with other equipment because of the high density of electrical and electronic systems in the spacecraft and aircrafts. Moreover, generally there are common DC buses in the mentioned systems, which aggravate the problem. Function of the electric motor causes appearance of the high-frequency components in the DC link current, which can interfere with other subsystems. In this paper, the analysis of electromagnetic noise and presentation of the proposed method based on the frequency spectrum of the DC link current and the leakage current from the motor to the ground network are done. The proposed method presents a new process based on the filtering method to overcome EMI. To cover the requirement analysis, the Maxwell software is used.

In this paper, a new adaptive reference based approach to direct torque control (DTC) method has been proposed for brushless direct current (BLDC) motor drives. Conventional DTC method uses two main reference parameters as: flux and torque. A main difference from the conventional method of it was that only one reference parameter (speed) was used to control the BLDC motor and the second control parameter (flux) was obtained from speed error through the proposed control algorithm. Thus, the DTC performance has been especially improved on systems which need variable speed and torque during operation, like electric vehicles. The dynamic models of the BLDC and the DTC method have been created on Matlab/Simulink. The proposed method has been confirmed and verified by the dynamic simulations on different working conditions. The simulation studies showed that the proposed method reduced remarkably the speed and the torque ripples when compared the conventional DTC method. Moreover, the proposed method has also very simple structure to apply the conventional DTC and its extra computational load to the controller is almost zero.
