The performance in higher secondary school education in India is a turning point in the academic lives of all students. As this academic performance is influenced by many factors, it is essential to develop predictive data mining model for students' performance so as to identify the slow learners and study the influence of the dominant factors on their academic performance. In the present investigation, a survey cum experimental methodology was adopted to generate a database and it was constructed from a primary and a secondary source. While the primary data was collected from the regular students, the secondary data was gathered from the school and office of the Chief Educational Officer (CEO). A total of 1000 datasets of the year 2006 from five different schools in three different districts of Tamilnadu were collected. The raw data was preprocessed in terms of filling up missing values, transforming values in one form into another and relevant attribute/ variable selection. As a result, we had 772 student records, which were used for CHAID prediction model construction. A set of prediction rules were extracted from CHIAD prediction model and the efficiency of the generated CHIAD prediction model was found. The accuracy of the present model was compared with other model and it has been found to be satisfactory.

Aligning large language models (LLMs) with human preferences is a critical challenge in AI research. While methods like Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) and Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) are widely used, they often rely on large, costly preference datasets. The current work lacks methods for high-quality data selection specifically for preference data. In this work, we introduce a novel difficulty-based data selection strategy for preference datasets, grounded in the DPO implicit reward mechanism. By selecting preference data examples with smaller DPO implicit reward gaps, which are indicative of more challenging cases, we improve data efficiency and model alignment. Our approach consistently outperforms five strong baselines across multiple datasets and alignment tasks, achieving superior performance with only 10\% of the original data. This principled, efficient selection method offers a promising solution for scaling LLM alignment with limited resources.

Imbalanced class distribution is a common problem in a number of fields including medical diagnostics, fraud detection, and others. It causes bias in classification algorithms leading to poor performance on the minority class data. In this paper, we propose a novel method for balancing the class distribution in data through intelligent resampling of the minority class instances. The proposed method is based on generating new minority instances in the neighborhood of the existing minority points via a gamma distribution. Our method offers a natural and coherent approach to balancing the data. We conduct a comprehensive numerical analysis of the new sampling technique. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods for imbalanced data. Concretely, the new sampling technique produces the best results on 12 out of 24 real life as well as synthetic datasets. For comparison, the SMOTE method achieves the top score on only 1 dataset. We conclude that the new technique offers a simple yet effective sampling approach to balance data.

Much of the literature on value creation in social media-based infrastructures has largely neglected the pivotal role of data and their processes. This paper tries to move beyond this limitation and discusses data-based value creation in data-intensive infrastructures, such as social media, by focusing on processes of data generation, use and reuse, and on infrastructure development activities. Building on current debates in value theory, the paper develops a multidimensional value framework to interrogate the data collected in an embedded ethnographical case study of the development of PatientsLikeMe, a social media network for patients. It asks when, and where, value is created from the data, and what kinds of value are created from them, as they move through the data infrastructure; and how infrastructure evolution relates to, and shapes, existing data-based value creation practices. The findings show that infrastructure development can have unpredictable consequences for data-based value creation, shaping shared practices in complex ways and through a web of interdependent situations. The paper argues for an understanding of infrastructural innovation that accounts for the situational interdependencies of data use and reuse. Uniquely positioned, the paper demonstrates the importance of research that looks critically into processes of data use in infrastructures to keep abreast of the social consequences of developments in big data and data analytics aimed at exploiting all kinds of digital traces for multiple purposes.

Electronic health records (EHR's) are only a first step in capturing and utilizing health-related data - the problem is turning that data into useful information. Models produced via data mining and predictive analysis profile inherited risks and environmental/behavioral factors associated with patient disorders, which can be utilized to generate predictions about treatment outcomes. This can form the backbone of clinical decision support systems driven by live data based on the actual population. The advantage of such an approach based on the actual population is that it is "adaptive". Here, we evaluate the predictive capacity of a clinical EHR of a large mental healthcare provider (~75,000 distinct clients a year) to provide decision support information in a real-world clinical setting. Initial research has achieved a 70% success rate in predicting treatment outcomes using these methods.

Over the past decades, the topic of data quality became extremely important in various application fields. Originally developed for data warehouses, it received a strong push with the big data concept and artificial intelligence systems. In the presented chapter, we are looking at traditional data quality dimensions, which mainly have a more technical nature. However, we concentrate mostly on the idea of defining a single data quality determinant, which does not substitute the dimensions but allows us to look at the data quality from the point of view of users and particular applications. We consider this approach, which is known as a fit-to-use indicator, in two domains. The first one is the test data for complicated multi-component software systems on the example of a stock exchange. The second domain is scientific research on the example of validation of handwriting psychology. We demonstrate how the fit-to-use determinant of data quality can be defined and formalized and what benefit to the improvement of data quality it can give.

Categorical data does not have an intrinsic definition of distance or order, and therefore, established visualization techniques for categorical data only allow for a set-based or frequency-based analysis, e.g., through Euler diagrams or Parallel Sets, and do not support a similarity-based analysis. We present a novel dimensionality reduction-based visualization for categorical data, which is based on defining the distance of two data items as the number of varying attributes. Our technique enables users to pre-attentively detect groups of similar data items and observe the properties of the projection, such as attributes strongly influencing the embedding. Our prototype visually encodes data properties in an enhanced scatterplot-like visualization, encoding attributes in the background to show the distribution of categories. In addition, we propose two graph-based measures to quantify the plot's visual quality, which rank attributes according to their contribution to cluster cohesion. To demonstrate the capabilities of our similarity-based approach, we compare it to Euler diagrams and Parallel Sets regarding visual scalability and show its benefits through an expert study with five data scientists analyzing the Titanic and Mushroom datasets with up to 23 attributes and 8124 category combinations. Our results indicate that the Categorical Data Map offers an effective analysis method, especially for large datasets with a high number of category combinations.
