This work demonstrates a new capability in roadway control: Speed-adaptive, infrastructure-linked connected and automated vehicles. We develop and deploy a lightly modified vehicle that is able to dynamically adjust the vehicle speed in response to posted variable speed limit messages generated by the infrastructure using LTE connectivity. This work describes the open source hardware and software platform that enables integration between infrastructure-based variable posted speed limits, and existing vehicle platforms for automated control. The vehicle is deployed in heavy morning traffic on I-24 in Nashville, TN. The control vehicle follows the posted variable speed limits, resulting in as much as a 25% reduction in speed variability compared to a human-piloted vehicle in the same traffic stream.

This MSc dissertation considers the effects of the current corporate interest on researchers in the field of machine learning. Situated within the field's cyclical history of academic, public and corporate interest, this dissertation investigates how current researchers view recent developments and negotiate their own research practices within an environment of increased commercial interest and funding. The original research consists of in-depth interviews with 12 machine learning researchers working in both academia and industry. Building on theory from science, technology and society studies, this dissertation problematizes the traditional narratives of the neoliberalization of academic research by allowing the researchers themselves to discuss how their career choices, working environments and interactions with others in the field have been affected by the reinvigorated corporate interest of recent years.

Abstract In the standard framework of thermodynamics, work is a random variable whose average is bounded by the change in free energy of the system. This average work is calculated without regard for the size of its fluctuations. Here we show that for some processes, such as reversible cooling, the fluctuations in work diverge. Realistic thermal machines may be unable to cope with arbitrarily large fluctuations. Hence, it is important to understand how thermodynamic efficiency rates are modified by bounding fluctuations. We quantify the work content and work of formation of arbitrary finite dimensional quantum states when the fluctuations in work are bounded by a given amount c . By varying c we interpolate between the standard and minimum free energies. We derive fundamental trade-offs between the magnitude of work and its fluctuations. As one application of these results, we derive the corrected Carnot efficiency of a qubit heat engine with bounded fluctuations.

A new method of feature extraction in the social network for within-network classification is proposed in the paper. The method provides new features calculated by combination of both: network structure information and class labels assigned to nodes. The influence of various features on classification performance has also been studied. The experiments on real-world data have shown that features created owing to the proposed method can lead to significant improvement of classification accuracy.

This work introduces a scalable filtering algorithm for multi-agent traffic estimation. Large-scale networks are spatially partitioned into overlapping road sections. The traffic dynamics of each section is given by the switching mode model (SMM) using a conservation principle, and the traffic state in each section is estimated by a local agent. In the proposed filter, a consensus term is applied to promote inter-agent agreement on overlapping sections. The new filter, termed a (spatially) distributed local Kalman consensus filter (DLKCF), is shown to maintain globally asymptotically stable (GAS) mean error dynamics when all sections switch among observable modes. When a section is unobservable, we show that the mean estimate of each state variable in the section is ultimately bounded, which is achieved by exploring the interaction between the properties of the traffic model and the measurement feedback of the filter. Based on the above results, the boundedness of the mean estimation error of the DLKCF under switching sequences with observable and unobservable modes is established to address the overall performance of the filter. Numerical experiments show the ability of the DLKCF to promote consensus, increase estimation accuracy compared to a local filter, and reduce the computational load compared to a centralized approach.

We consider a quasi-probability distribution of work for an isolated quantum system coupled to the energy-storage device given by the ideal weight. Specifically, we analyze a trade-off between changes in average energy and changes in weight's variance, where work is extracted from the coherent and incoherent ergotropy of the system. Primarily, we reveal that the extraction of positive coherent ergotropy can be accompanied by the reduction of work fluctuations (quantified by a variance loss) by utilizing the non-classical states of a work reservoir. On the other hand, we derive a fluctuation-decoherence relation for a quantum weight, defining a lower bound of its energy dispersion via a dumping function of the coherent contribution to the system's ergotropy. Specifically, it reveals that unlocking ergotropy from coherences results in high fluctuations, which diverge when the total coherent energy is unlocked. The proposed autonomous protocol of work extraction shows a significant difference between extracting coherent and incoherent ergotropy: The former can decrease the variance, but its absolute value diverges if more and more energy is extracted, whereas for the latter, the gain is always non-negative, but a total (incoherent) ergotropy can be extracted with finite work fluctuations. Furthermore, we present the framework in terms of the introduced quasi-probability distribution, which has a physical interpretation of its cumulants, is free from the invasive nature of measurements, and reduces to the two-point measurement scheme (TPM) for incoherent states. Finally, we analytically solve the work-variance trade-off for a qubit, explicitly revealing all the above quantum and classical regimes.

This article proposes a method to quantitatively measure the resilience of transportation systems using GPS data from taxis. The granularity of the GPS data necessary for this analysis is relatively coarse; it only requires coordinates for the beginning and end of trips, the metered distance, and the total travel time. The method works by computing the historical distribution of pace (normalized travel times) between various regions of a city and measuring the pace deviations during an unusual event. This method is applied to a dataset of nearly 700 million taxi trips in New York City, which is used to analyze the transportation infrastructure resilience to Hurricane Sandy. The analysis indicates that Hurricane Sandy impacted traffic conditions for more than five days, and caused a peak delay of two minutes per mile. Practically, it identifies that the evacuation caused only minor disruptions, but significant delays were encountered during the post-disaster reentry process. Since the implementation of this method is very efficient, it could potentially be used as an online monitoring tool, representing a first step toward quantifying city scale resilience with coarse GPS data.
