Résumé scientifique
Conventional seq2seq chatbot models attempt only to find sentences with the highest probabilities conditioned on the input sequences, without considering the sentiment of the output sentences. In this paper, we investigate four models to scale or adjust the sentiment of the chatbot response: a persona-based model, reinforcement learning, a plug and play model, and CycleGAN, all based on the seq2seq model. We also develop machine-evaluated metrics to estimate whether the responses are reasonable given the input. These metrics, together with human evaluation, are used to analyze the performance of the four models in terms of different aspects; reinforcement learning and CycleGAN are shown to be very attractive.

CheerBots: Chatbots toward Empathy and Emotionusing Reinforcement LearningJiun-Hao Jhan, Chao-Peng Liu, Shyh-Kang Jeng et al. · 2021 · Calcul et langage · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Apart from the coherence and fluency of responses, an empathetic chatbot emphasizes more on people's feelings. By considering altruistic behaviors between human interaction, empathetic chatbots enable people to get a better interactive and supportive experience. This study presents a framework whereby several empathetic chatbots are based on understanding users' implied feelings and replying empathetically for multiple dialogue turns. We call these chatbots CheerBots. CheerBots can be retrieval-based or generative-based and were finetuned by deep reinforcement learning. To respond in an empathetic way, we develop a simulating agent, a Conceptual Human Model, as aids for CheerBots in training…

Deep Learning Based Chatbot ModelsRichard Csaky · 2019 · Calcul et langage · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
A conversational agent (chatbot) is a piece of software that is able to communicate with humans using natural language. Modeling conversation is an important task in natural language processing and artificial intelligence. While chatbots can be used for various tasks, in general they have to understand users' utterances and provide responses that are relevant to the problem at hand. In my work, I conduct an in-depth survey of recent literature, examining over 70 publications related to chatbots published in the last 3 years. Then, I proceed to make the argument that the very nature of the general conversation domain demands approaches that are different from current state-of-of-the-art archi…

Is ChatGPT a Good Sentiment Analyzer? A Preliminary StudyZengzhi Wang, Qiming Xie, Yi Feng et al. · 2023 · Calcul et langage · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Recently, ChatGPT has drawn great attention from both the research community and the public. We are particularly interested in whether it can serve as a universal sentiment analyzer. To this end, in this work, we provide a preliminary evaluation of ChatGPT on the understanding of \emph{opinions}, \emph{sentiments}, and \emph{emotions} contained in the text. Specifically, we evaluate it in three settings, including \emph{standard} evaluation, \emph{polarity shift} evaluation and \emph{open-domain} evaluation. We conduct an evaluation on 7 representative sentiment analysis tasks covering 17 benchmark datasets and compare ChatGPT with fine-tuned BERT and corresponding state-of-the-art (SOTA) mo…

Towards a Human-like Open-Domain ChatbotDaniel Adiwardana, Minh-Thang Luong, David R. So et al. · 2020 · Calcul et langage · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
We present Meena, a multi-turn open-domain chatbot trained end-to-end on data mined and filtered from public domain social media conversations. This 2.6B parameter neural network is trained to minimize perplexity, an automatic metric that we compare against human judgement of multi-turn conversation quality. To capture this judgement, we propose a human evaluation metric called Sensibleness and Specificity Average (SSA), which captures key elements of good conversation. Interestingly, our experiments show strong correlation between perplexity and SSA. The fact that the best perplexity end-to-end trained Meena scores high on SSA (72% on multi-turn evaluation) suggests that a human-level SSA o…

Learning Improvised Chatbots from Adversarial Modifications of Natural Language FeedbackMakesh Narsimhan Sreedhar, Kun Ni, Siva Reddy · 2020 · Calcul et langage · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
The ubiquitous nature of chatbots and their interaction with users generate an enormous amount of data. Can we improve chatbots using this data? A self-feeding chatbot improves itself by asking natural language feedback when a user is dissatisfied with its response and uses this feedback as an additional training sample. However, user feedback in most cases contains extraneous sequences hindering their usefulness as a training sample. In this work, we propose a generative adversarial model that converts noisy feedback into a plausible natural response in a conversation. The generator's goal is to convert the feedback into a response that answers the user's previous utterance and to fool the …

BotChat: Evaluating LLMs' Capabilities of Having Multi-Turn DialoguesHaodong Duan, Jueqi Wei, Chonghua Wang et al. · 2023 · Calcul et langage · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Interacting with human via high-quality multi-turn dialogues is a key feature of large language models (LLMs). However, human-based evaluation of such capability involves intensive manual labor. This report provides a preliminary evaluation of existing large language models for human-style multi-turn chatting, through an LLM-based approach. We start from real-world human dialogues and keep the very first utterances as the ChatSEED. Then we prompt LLMs to generate a full multi-turn dialogue (tens of utterances) based on the ChatSEED, utterance by utterance. Finally, we adopt state-of-the-art LLMs (GPT-4, \etc) as the judge to evaluate the generated dialogues. With different evaluation protoco…

Recipes for building an open-domain chatbotStephen Roller, Emily Dinan, Naman Goyal et al. · 2020 · Calcul et langage · Résumé IA disponible
Résumé scientifique
Building open-domain chatbots is a challenging area for machine learning research. While prior work has shown that scaling neural models in the number of parameters and the size of the data they are trained on gives improved results, we show that other ingredients are important for a high-performing chatbot. Good conversation requires a number of skills that an expert conversationalist blends in a seamless way: providing engaging talking points and listening to their partners, and displaying knowledge, empathy and personality appropriately, while maintaining a consistent persona. We show that large scale models can learn these skills when given appropriate training data and choice of generat…

What we really want to find by Sentiment Analysis: The Relationship between Computational Models and Psychological StateHwiyeol Jo, Soo-Min Kim, Jeong Ryu · 2017 · Calcul et langage · Pas encore résumé
Résumé scientifique
As the first step to model emotional state of a person, we build sentiment analysis models with existing deep neural network algorithms and compare the models with psychological measurements to enlighten the relationship. In the experiments, we first examined psychological state of 64 participants and asked them to summarize the story of a book, Chronicle of a Death Foretold (Marquez, 1981). Secondly, we trained models using crawled 365,802 movie review data; then we evaluated participants' summaries using the pretrained model as a concept of transfer learning. With the background that emotion affects on memories, we investigated the relationship between the evaluation score of the summaries…
