AbstractThe paper presents the modeling , design , and analysis of a simple steam turbine generator using Matlab/Simulink Toolbox. The objective is to convert heat energy into electrical energy efficiently. The open-loop system is initially analyzed and found to have an efficiency of 76.92%. To improve the generating voltage and overall performance , observer-based and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controllers are designed and compared. SummarySteam turbine generators play a crucial role in converting heat energy into electrical energy in various applications. In this study conducted by Mustefa Jibril et al., the authors focus on the modeling , design , and analysis of a steam turbine generator using Matlab/Simulink Toolbox. The initial analysis involves studying the open-loop system's efficiency which is determined to be 76.92%. To enhance the generating voltage and overall performance , two different controllers are proposed: observer-based controller and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller. The comparison between these two controllers aims to identify which one provides better performance improvement for generating a 220 DC volt output. Through simulation results obtained from Matlab/Simulink Toolbox experiments, it is observed that the steam turbine generator with an observer-based controller exhibits a smaller percentage overshoot with minimum settling time compared to both the LQR controller and the open-loop system. The findings of the study indicate that the steam turbine generator with an observer-based controller demonstrates superior performance improvement compared to the LQR controller. This suggests that the observer-based controller is more effective in enhancing the generating voltage and overall efficiency of the steam turbine generator. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into improving the performance of steam turbine generators through the implementation of advanced control strategies. The results highlight the significance of utilizing observer-based controllers for achieving better efficiency and voltage generation in steam turbine systems. Further studies can be conducted to explore additional control techniques and optimize various parameters for even greater performance enhancement.

Introduction
Steam turbine generators are widely used in various industries for converting heat energy into electrical energy. The efficiency of these systems is crucial for ensuring optimal performance and reducing energy consumption. In this research paper, Mustefa Jibril et al. present a study on the design and simulation of a steam turbine generator using observer-based and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controllers.
The authors aim to improve the generating voltage and overall performance of the steam turbine generator by implementing advanced control strategies. The open-loop system is initially analyzed, followed by the design and comparison of two different controllers: observer-based controller and LQR controller.
Methodology
The research methodology involves modeling, designing, and analyzing a simple steam turbine generator using Matlab/Simulink Toolbox. The authors use mathematical equations to model the system components such as boiler, condenser, pump, valve, and generator. The parameters used in the model are based on real-world data from an existing steam turbine system.
After constructing the open-loop system model, its efficiency is determined through simulations in Matlab/Simulink Toolbox. To improve the system's performance, two different controllers are designed: observer-based controller and LQR controller.
Observer-Based Controller Design
The observer-based controller uses feedback from sensors to estimate unmeasured states of the system. This information is then used to adjust control inputs accordingly for better performance. In this study, an observer-based controller with state-feedback gain matrix Kobs is designed using pole placement technique.
LQR Controller Design
The LQR controller aims to minimize a cost function that considers both control effort and error between desired output and actual output values. In this study, an LQR controller with state-feedback gain matrix Kopt is designed using optimization techniques.
Results
Through simulations in Matlab/Simulink Toolbox, the authors compare the performance of the open-loop system with that of the observer-based and LQR controllers. The results show that both controllers improve the generating voltage and overall efficiency of the steam turbine generator.
However, it is observed that the observer-based controller outperforms the LQR controller in terms of percentage overshoot and settling time. The steam turbine generator with an observer-based controller exhibits a smaller percentage overshoot with minimum settling time compared to both the LQR controller and open-loop system.
Conclusion
The research paper concludes that implementing advanced control strategies such as observer-based and LQR controllers can significantly improve the performance of steam turbine generators. Through simulations, it is observed that the observer-based controller provides better performance improvement for generating a 220 DC volt output compared to the LQR controller.
This study highlights the importance of utilizing advanced control techniques for enhancing efficiency and voltage generation in steam turbine systems. It also suggests that further research can be conducted to explore additional control strategies and optimize various parameters for even greater performance enhancement.
In conclusion, this research paper provides valuable insights into improving steam turbine generator systems' performance through effective control design. The findings have practical implications for industries using these systems, as they can potentially reduce energy consumption and increase efficiency by implementing advanced control strategies.
