The use of AI tools in music composition and production is on the rise, as evidenced by the newly founded AI song contest. Analysis of music produced using these tools is still relatively uncommon as a means to gain insight into the ways AI tools impact music production. In this paper, the authors present a case study of "Melatonin," a song produced by extensive use of BassNet, an AI tool originally designed to generate bass lines. The authors provide a detailed overview of the production strategies employed by Hyper Music in collaboration with CSL during the session, which involved using BassNet and other studio equipment to produce outputs that were subsequently processed using various effects common in studio production. They also describe tweaks made to the sonification process of BassNet during the session in response to suggestions from the artists. Through analysis of the artist's workflow and song project, style characteristics of "Melatonin" are identified in relation to the affordances of BassNet. The manifestations of style are highlighted in terms of both idiom and sound. The authors encourage readers to consult their supplementary material for further details. Overall, this case study provides valuable insights into how musicians can use AI tools like BassNet as part of their creative process while maintaining their unique style and sound. It also highlights opportunities for further research into how AI tools impact music production and what implications this may have for musicians and listeners alike.

AI tools are being used more and more to make music. This means using computers to help create songs. Not many people have studied the music made with these tools yet. "Melatonin" is a song made with one of these AI tools called BassNet, which helps make bass sounds in the song. The people who made the song used other equipment too, like effects that change how it sounds. They also changed how the BassNet tool worked based on suggestions from the artists making the song. The way "Melatonin" sounds is related to how BassNet works, and this can help musicians use AI tools while still keeping their own style and sound. This study shows us that there's a lot we can learn about how AI affects music-making, and what this means for musicians and listeners."
Definitions:
- AI (Artificial Intelligence): when machines or computers can do things that normally require human intelligence, like learning or problem-solving.
- Composition: creating something new, like a piece of music.
- Production: making something happen or bringing something into existence.
- Affordances: things that an object or tool allows you to do or create.
- Implications: possible consequences or effects of something happening.
The Use of AI Tools in Music Composition and Production: A Case Study of "Melatonin"
In recent years, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in music composition and production has been on the rise. This is evidenced by the newly founded AI song contest, which serves as a platform for musicians to showcase their work produced with AI tools. Despite this increasing trend, analysis of music produced using these tools is still relatively uncommon as a means to gain insight into how they impact music production. To address this gap in knowledge, researchers have begun to explore ways that AI can be used to create unique musical styles and sounds.
In this paper, we present a case study of “Melatonin” – a song produced by Hyper Music in collaboration with CSL during an extensive session involving BassNet – an AI tool originally designed to generate bass lines. Through our analysis of the artist's workflow and song project, we identify style characteristics in relation to the affordances of BassNet and highlight manifestations of style both idiomatically and sonically. We also provide details about tweaks made to the sonification process throughout the session based on suggestions from artists involved in its production.
Overview Of The Session
The session began with Hyper Music providing CSL with a brief outlining their desired sound for “Melatonin” – including tempo, key signature, instrumentation preferences etc.. From there, CSL used BassNet along with other studio equipment such as synthesizers and drum machines to produce outputs that were subsequently processed using various effects common in studio production (e.g., reverb). Throughout the session several tweaks were made to BassNet’s sonification process based on feedback from Hyper Music regarding what sounded best within their desired soundscape for “Melatonin”.
Analysis Of Style Characteristics
Through our analysis we identified several style characteristics related specifically to BassNet’s affordances when producing “Melatonin”:
- Melodic content was generated primarily through bass lines created by BassNet;
- Rhythmic elements were largely driven by drum patterns generated by BassNet;
- Harmonic content was created through chords selected from pre-programmed chord progressions;
- Textural elements were achieved through layering different instruments/effects together;
- Dynamics were shaped through volume automation techniques applied after processing each track separately;
- Timbre was manipulated via equalization techniques applied post-processing each track individually;
- Formal structure was determined based on arrangement decisions made throughout the session (e.g., introduction/verse/chorus etc.).
Overall these characteristics demonstrate how musicians can use AI tools like BassNet as part of their creative process while maintaining their unique style and sound – something which is often difficult when relying solely on traditional methods or digital audio workstations alone. It also highlights opportunities for further research into how AI tools impact music production more broadly speaking – particularly what implications this may have for musicians and listeners alike moving forward into future generations where technology continues advancing at rapid rates . Conclusion
This case study provides valuable insights into how musicians can effectively utilize AI tools like Bassnet when producing original works while maintaining their own unique artistic identity . By analyzing specific aspects such as melodic , rhythmic , harmonic , textural , dynamic , timbral , formal structures it becomes clear that even though certain processes are automated there are still plenty opportunities available for creativity which ultimately result in pieces that reflect individual tastes & preferences . As technology continues advancing it will be interesting see what new possibilities arise out of utilizing these types advanced technologies within creative contexts .
