In "Information, Computation, Cognition. Agency-based Hierarchies of Levels," Gordana Dodig-Crnkovic delves into the concept of nature as an informational structure with computational dynamics, known as info-computationalism. The paper argues that an info-computational agent is essential for the potential information of the world to actualize. By defining information as the difference in one physical system that makes a difference in another physical system and drawing from Bateson and Hewitt's definitions, Dodig-Crnkovic establishes natural computation as a computational model of the dynamics of the physical world. This model suggests that information processing is constantly occurring on various levels of organization. The framework presented in this paper sheds light on the intricate relationships between computation, information, agency, and cognition within a common conceptual framework. This perspective holds particular significance for fields such as biology and robotics where understanding how information is processed and utilized can lead to advancements in artificial intelligence and biological systems. By emphasizing the role of info-computational agents in shaping our understanding of nature's informational structure and computational dynamics, Dodig-Crnkovic highlights the importance of considering these factors when studying complex systems in both natural and artificial contexts.

Abstract: Nature can be seen as informational structure with computational dynamics (info-computationalism), where an (info-computational) agent is needed for the potential information of the world to actualize. Starting from the definition of information as the difference in one physical system that makes a difference in another physical system, which combines Bateson and Hewitt definitions, the argument is advanced for natural computation as a computational model of the dynamics of the physical world where information processing is constantly going on, on a variety of levels of organization. This setting helps elucidating the relationships between computation, information, agency and cognition, within the common conceptual framework, which has special relevance for biology and robotics.
