In their paper titled "Navigating the Path of Writing: Outline-guided Text Generation with Large Language Models," authors Yukyung Lee, Soonwon Ka, Bokyung Son, Pilsung Kang, and Jaewook Kang delve into the realm of Large Language Models (LLMs) and their impact on the writing process. LLMs have revolutionized collaborative content creation and boosted productivity. However, the challenge of generating high-quality, user-aligned text persists. To address this issue, the authors introduce a novel framework called Writing Path. This framework leverages explicit outlines to steer LLMs towards producing goal-oriented and top-notch pieces of writing. Drawing inspiration from structured writing planning and reasoning paths, the Writing Path approach focuses on capturing and reflecting user intentions throughout the writing journey. The authors curate a diverse dataset sourced from unstructured blog posts to serve as a benchmark for evaluating writing performance. They also present a comprehensive evaluation framework that assesses both the quality of outlines and generated texts. Through rigorous evaluations involving prominent LLMs such as GPT-3.5-turbo, GPT-4, and HyperCLOVA X, the authors demonstrate that implementing the Writing Path approach significantly enhances text quality according to assessments conducted by both LLMs themselves and human evaluators. This study underscores of integrating specialized writing techniques into LLMs to better cater to of users. As their work remains under review,'s research sheds light on innovative strategies for guiding LLMs in producing user-centric written content effectively.

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly impacted the writing process, enabling collaborative content creation and enhancing productivity. However, generating high-quality, user-aligned text remains challenging. In this paper, we propose Writing Path, a framework that uses explicit outlines to guide LLMs in generating goal-oriented, high-quality pieces of writing. Our approach draws inspiration from structured writing planning and reasoning paths, focusing on capturing and reflecting user intentions throughout the writing process. We construct a diverse dataset from unstructured blog posts to benchmark writing performance and introduce a comprehensive evaluation framework assessing the quality of outlines and generated texts. Our evaluations with GPT-3.5-turbo, GPT-4, and HyperCLOVA X demonstrate that the Writing Path approach significantly enhances text quality according to both LLMs and human evaluations. This study highlights the potential of integrating writing-specific techniques into LLMs to enhance their ability to meet the diverse writing needs of users.
