Title: Hydrogen and Battery Based Energy Storage System (ESS) for Future DC Microgrids Abstract , , and are key components in the transition towards a more sustainable and renewable energy future. This paper presents a comprehensive study on a hybrid energy storage system (ESS) that combines both hydrogen and battery technologies to address the evolving needs of future grids with high renewable energy penetration. The proposed system aims to provide a stable energy supply over an extended period while effectively managing sudden demands and surpluses within the microgrid. A novel system architecture is introduced, which utilizes an isolated DC-DC converter to facilitate clean hydrogen production through an electrolyzer. The produced hydrogen is then pressurized and stored in tanks for later use, serving as a crucial input for fuel cells that regulate and transform it into electricity. The generated electricity is subsequently fed back into the grid using a DC-DC boost converter. To demonstrate its functionality, a Simulink model with a 1 kV DC bus voltage is utilized, showcasing various aspects of power conversion, electrolysis process, storage tank operation, and fuel cell behavior based on dynamic changes in load demand and surplus power within the microgrid. Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) technology is identified as the primary choice for both electrolyzers and fuel cells due to its economic viability and efficiency considerations. Overall, this paper highlights how combining with traditional battery systems can offer an effective solution for future DC microgrids facing challenges related to and .
