Battery Charging
John G. Hayes (University College Cork), G. Abas Goodarzi
Abstract: This chapter investigates the charging of electric vehicles from the electric grid. Battery charging connects the vehicle to the electric grid, and many factors must be considered, such as available voltages and wiring, standardization, safety, communication, ergonomics, and more. The chapter reviews various charging architectures and charging standards and describes conductive and wireless standards. It discusses the boost power-factor correction power stage. There are a number of options for charging the vehicle, and there are a variety of charging technologies available for electric vehicles. Choices and decisions must be made by the various manufacturers, infrastructure providers, and the consumers with respect to the following areas: conductive or wireless/inductive charging, high-power or rapid charging, onboard versus off-board chargers, and integral charging. Electrical equipments, especially mobile devices, are designed to operate globally. There are many configurations of wiring and voltage, power, and frequency around the world.
