Abstract: Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology allows Ethernet devices to receive power and data over their existing LAN cabling without modifications to any of the existing Ethernet infrastructure. PoE radically reduces installation costs by eliminating the conduit, power wires, and installation labor required to install an Ethernet device. PoE brings the ability to connect and power devices like barcode readers, RFID Systems, wireless access points, and web-based security cameras. PoE devices must not present a safety hazard. The voltage must be low enough to preclude an electrical shock. PoE technology is driven by the need to install wireless access points in locations without AC power at a cost that is not prohibitive. A huge potential application for PoE is the charging of battery-driven devices like cell phones, pagers, PDAs, and the like. These devices now all have an assortment of special cables and adapters.
