Ethernet Protocol and Addressing
Perry S. Marshall, John S. Rinaldi
Abstract: The firmware in our Ethernet interface hardware that checks the destination address, controls access to the network, and verifies the Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is known as the media access control (MAC). This layer is not part of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol stack in our computer. Protocols in this suite work together by passing their messages up and down the protocol stack. IP addresses are split into two parts: the NetID (a global designation, indicating a specific network somewhere on the Internet) and the HostID (a local address within a network, designating a specific machine). The Telnet utility provides a standard interface by which a client program on one host may access the resources of the server host as though the client were a local terminal connected directly to the server. Telnet allows the LAN attached user to log in the same way as the local terminal user.
