Optomechanical state reconstruction and nonclassicality verification beyond the resolved-sideband regime

    Résumé scientifique

Quantum optomechanics uses optical means to generate and manipulate quantum states of motion of mechanical resonators. This provides an intriguing platform for the study of fundamental physics and the development of novel quantum devices. Yet, the challenge of reconstructing and verifying the quantum state of mechanical systems has remained a major roadblock in the field. Here, we present a novel approach that allows for tomographic reconstruction of the quantum state of a mechanical system without the need for extremely high quality optical cavities. We show that, without relying on the usual state transfer presumption between light an mechanics, the full optomechanical Hamiltonian can be e…

Studying mechanical resonators via radiation pressure offers a rich avenue for the exploration of quantum mechanical behavior in a macroscopic regime. However, quantum state preparation and especially quantum state reconstruction of mechanical oscillators remains a significant challenge. Here we propose a scheme to realize quantum state tomography, squeezing, and state purification of a mechanical resonator using short optical pulses. The scheme presented allows observation of mechanical quantum features despite preparation from a thermal state and is shown to be experimentally feasible using optical microcavities. Our framework thus provides a promising means to explore the quantum nature o…

    Résumé scientifique

We introduce a scheme to reconstruct an arbitrary quantum state of a mechanical oscillator network. We assume that a single element of the network is coupled to a cavity field via a linearized optomechanical interaction, whose time dependence is controlled by a classical driving field. By designing a suitable interaction profile, we show how the statistics of an arbitrary mechanical quadrature can be encoded in the cavity field, which can then be measured. We discuss the important special case of Gaussian state reconstruction, and study numerically the effectiveness of our scheme for a finite number of measurements. Finally, we speculate on possible routes to extend our ideas to the regime o…

We theoretically show that a geometric phase, generated by a sequence of four optomechanical interactions can be used to generate or increase nonlinearities in the evolution of a mechanical resonator. Interactions of this form lead to new mechanisms for preparing mechanical squeezed states of motion, and the preparation of non-classical states with significant Wigner negativity.

Quantum optical measurement techniques offer a rich avenue for quantum control of mechanical oscillators via cavity optomechanics. In particular, a powerful yet little explored combination utilizes optical measurements to perform heralded non-Gaussian mechanical state preparation followed by tomography to determine the mechanical phase-space distribution. Here, we experimentally perform heralded single-phonon and multiphonon subtraction via photon counting to a laser-cooled mechanical thermal state with a Brillouin optomechanical system at room temperature and use optical heterodyne detection to measure the s-parametrized Wigner distribution of the non-Gaussian mechanical states generated. Observing a physical quantity without disturbing it is a key capability for the control of individual quantum systems. Such back-action-evading or quantum non-demolition measurements were first introduced in the 1970s for gravitational wave detection, and now such techniques are an indispensable tool throughout quantum science. Here we perform measurements of the position of a mechanical oscillator using pulses of light with a duration much shorter than a period of mechanical motion. Utilizing this back-action-evading interaction, we demonstrate state preparation and full state tomography of the mechanical motional state. We have reconstructed states with a position uncertainty reduced to 19…

Reconstruction of quantum state of mechanical mirror via polariton-phonon coupling
    Saeed Asiri, Ze-Yang Liao, M. Zubairy · 2018 · Physica Scripta · cité 5 fois · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

When an atom is coupled to an opto-mechanical system, the evolution of the atom can be significantly modified by the mechanical phonon state. Previously, we showed that the anomalous population inversion can occur in this hybrid system. Here, we show that the quantum state (pure or mixed) of the mechanical mirror can be reconstructed with very high fidelity by measuring the population dynamics of the atom passing through the opto-mechanical cavity. This method may find important applications in the opto-mechanical-based quantum devices.

Optical squeezing for an optomechanical system without quantizing the mechanical motion
Yue Ma, F. Armata, K. Khosla et al. · 2020 · arXiv: Quantum Physics · preprint, non relu par les pairs · cité 7 fois · Pas encore résumé
    Résumé scientifique

Witnessing quantumness in mesoscopic objects is an important milestone for both quantum technologies and foundational reasons. Cavity optomechanics offers the ideal system to achieve this by combing high precision optical measurements with mechanical oscillators. However, mechanical quantumness can only be established if the behaviour is incompatible with any classical description of an oscillator. After explicitly considering classical and hybrid quantum-classical descriptions of an optomechanical system, we rule out squeezing of the optical field as such a witness by showing it is also predicted without quantizing the mechanical oscillator.

This paper gives a brief review of the basic physics of quantum optomechanics and provides an overview of some of its recent developments and current areas of focus. It first outlines the basic theory of cavity optomechanical cooling and gives a brief status report of the experimental state‐of‐the‐art. It then turns to the deep quantum regime of operation of optomechanical oscillators and covers selected aspects of quantum state preparation, control and characterization, including mechanical squeezing and pulsed optomechanics. This is followed by a discussion of the “bottom‐up” approach that exploits ultracold atomic samples instead of nanoscale systems. It concludes with an outlook that con…

Significant achievements in high-sensitivity measurements will soon allow us to probe quantum behaviors of macroscopic mechanical oscillators. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. A 80, 043802 (2009)], we formulated a general framework for treating preparation of Gaussian quantum states of macroscopic oscillators through linear position measurements. To outline a complete procedure for testing macroscopic quantum mechanics, here we consider a subsequent verification stage which probes the prepared macroscopic quantum state and verifies the quantum dynamics. By adopting an optimal time-dependent homodyne detection in which the phase of the local oscillator varies in time, the conditional quantum stat…

    Résumé scientifique

Optical laser fields have been widely used to achieve quantum control over the motional and internal degrees of freedom of atoms and ions, molecules and atomic gases. A route to controlling the quantum states of macroscopic mechanical oscillators in a similar fashion is to exploit the parametric coupling between optical and mechanical degrees of freedom through radiation pressure in suitably engineered optical cavities. If the optomechanical coupling is ‘quantum coherent’—that is, if the coherent coupling rate exceeds both the optical and the mechanical decoherence rate—quantum states are transferred from the optical field to the mechanical oscillator and vice versa. This transfer allows con…

We study the quantum measurement of a cantilever using a parametrically coupled electromagnetic cavity which is driven at the two sidebands corresponding to the mechanical motion. This scheme, originally due to Braginsky et al (Braginsky V, Vorontsov Y I and Thorne K P 1980 Science 209 547), allows a back-action free measurement of one quadrature of the cantilever's motion, and hence the possibility of generating a squeezed state. We present a complete quantum theory of this system, and derive simple conditions on when the quantum limit on the added noise can be surpassed. We also study the conditional dynamics of the measurement, and discuss how such a scheme (when coupled with feedback) ca…

We propose an approach to enhance the mechanical effects of single photons in a two-mode optomechanical system. This is achieved by introducing a resonance-frequency modulation to the cavity fields. When the modulation frequency and amplitude satisfy certain conditions, the mechanical displacement induced by single photons could be larger than the quantum zero-point fluctuation of the oscillating resonator. This method can be used to create distinct mechanical superposition states.

High-order quantum nonlinearity is an important prerequisite for the advanced quantum technology leading to universal quantum processing with large information capacity of continuous variables. Levitated optomechanics, a field where motion of dielectric particles is driven by precisely controlled tweezer beams, is capable of attaining the required nonlinearity via engineered potential landscapes of mechanical motion. Importantly, to achieve nonlinear quantum effects, the evolution caused by the free motion of mechanics and thermal decoherence have to be suppressed. For this purpose, we devise a method of stroboscopic application of a highly nonlinear potential to a mechanical oscillator that…

We present a method to implement two-phonon interactions between mechanical resonators and spin qubits in hybrid setups, and show that these systems can be applied for the generation of nonclassical mechanical states even in the presence of dissipation. In particular, we demonstrate that the implementation of a two-phonon Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian under coherent driving of the qubit yields a dissipative phase transition with similarities to the one predicted in the model of the degenerate parametric oscillator: beyond a certain threshold in the driving amplitude, the driven-dissipative system sustains a mixed steady state consisting of a "jumping cat," i.e., a cat state undergoing random j…
