The Hyper-Auteur: Reconfiguring Auteur Theory for Solo AI Filmmaking
Xinyi Wang
Résumé : This paper introduces "hyper-auteur cinema" to theorize an emergent form shaped by generative AI and solo production, identifying the "hyper-auteur" as its authorial figure. Against auteur theory's evolution—from French New Wave origins to American systematization and subsequent critiques—the rise of AI tools enabling single-individual filmmaking necessitates rethinking authorship. Hyper-auteur cinema is neither an extension of traditional auteurism nor a concession to human-machine collaboration, but a qualitative transformation under one-person, full-process production. Drawing on practice-based research, the paper argues that the hyper-auteur functions as creative originator, system designer, and process controller. This framework complicates Barthes's "death of the author" and Foucault's "author function," extending these paradigms into AI-generated cinema. By situating the hyper-auteur within auteur theory's trajectory, the paper offers renewed vocabulary for authorship in the age of solo AI filmmaking.
