In this paper, categorization of nanomaterials is examined from four perspectives; context, criteria for success, ensuring measurements are relevant, and the life cycle of a nanomaterial. For each perspective, its relevance to categorization is discussed as well as the difficulties it presents. For example, while the context of assessing potential harm to living things and the environment is clearly important, other contexts are often needed and require different categorization schemes. Understanding what success means for a categorization scheme, within its target context, is critical to making sure a categorization is actually useful. The complexity of nanomaterials and their interactions makes generating and collecting the required data and metadata to support categorization a challenge. Finally, the transformation a nanomaterial undergoes through its lifetime, including the testing process, present additional challenges to accurate categorization. How these factors impact development of usable categorization schemes is analyzed.

The automated categorization (or classification) of texts into predefined categories has witnessed a booming interest in the last 10 years, due to the increased availability of documents in digital form and the ensuing need to organize them. In the research community the dominant approach to this problem is based on machine learning techniques: a general inductive process automatically builds a classifier by learning, from a set of preclassified documents, the characteristics of the categories. The advantages of this approach over the knowledge engineering approach (consisting in the manual definition of a classifier by domain experts) are a very good effectiveness, considerable savings in terms of expert labor power, and straightforward portability to different domains. This survey discusses the main approaches to text categorization that fall within the machine learning paradigm. We will discuss in detail issues pertaining to three different problems, namely, document representation, classifier construction, and classifier evaluation.
Researchers from ISTI-CNR, Pisa, aim at producing better text classification methods through the use of supervised learning techniques in the generation of the internal representations of the texts

Fairness is a critical trait in decision making. As machine-learning models are increasingly being used in sensitive application domains (e.g. education and employment) for decision making, it is crucial that the decisions computed by such models are free of unintended bias. But how can we automatically validate the fairness of arbitrary machine-learning models? For a given machine-learning model and a set of sensitive input parameters, our AEQUITAS approach automatically discovers discriminatory inputs that highlight fairness violation. At the core of AEQUITAS are three novel strategies to employ probabilistic search over the input space with the objective of uncovering fairness violation. Our AEQUITAS approach leverages inherent robustness property in common machine-learning models to design and implement scalable test generation methodologies. An appealing feature of our generated test inputs is that they can be systematically added to the training set of the underlying model and improve its fairness. To this end, we design a fully automated module that guarantees to improve the fairness of the underlying model. We implemented AEQUITAS and we have evaluated it on six state-of-the-art classifiers, including a classifier that was designed with fairness constraints. We show that AEQUITAS effectively generates inputs to uncover fairness violation in all the subject classifiers and systematically improves the fairness of the respective models using the generated test inputs. In our evaluation, AEQUITAS generates up to 70% discriminatory inputs (w.r.t. the total number of inputs generated) and leverages these inputs to improve the fairness up to 94%.

Automated testing is essential for evaluating and improving the reliability of Large Language Models (LLMs), yet the lack of automated oracles for verifying output correctness remains a key challenge. We present LLMORPH, an automated testing tool specifically designed for LLMs performing NLP tasks, which leverages Metamorphic Testing (MT) to uncover faulty behaviors without relying on human-labeled data. MT uses Metamorphic Relations (MRs) to generate follow-up inputs from source test input, enabling detection of inconsistencies in model outputs without the need of expensive labelled data. LLMORPH is aimed at researchers and developers who want to evaluate the robustness of LLM-based NLP systems. In this paper, we detail the design, implementation, and practical usage of LLMORPH, demonstrating how it can be easily extended to any LLM, NLP task, and set of MRs. In our evaluation, we applied 36 MRs across four NLP benchmarks, testing three state-of-the-art LLMs: GPT-4, LLAMA3, and HERMES 2. This produced over 561,000 test executions. Results demonstrate LLMORPH's effectiveness in automatically exposing inconsistencies.

Important decisions that impact human lives, livelihoods, and the natural environment are increasingly being automated. Delegating tasks to so-called automated decision-making systems (ADMS) can improve efficiency and enable new solutions. However, these benefits are coupled with ethical challenges. For example, ADMS may produce discriminatory outcomes, violate individual privacy, and undermine human self-determination. New governance mechanisms are thus needed that help organisations design and deploy ADMS in ways that are ethical, while enabling society to reap the full economic and social benefits of automation. In this article, we consider the feasibility and efficacy of ethics-based auditing (EBA) as a governance mechanism that allows organisations to validate claims made about their ADMS. Building on previous work, we define EBA as a structured process whereby an entity's present or past behaviour is assessed for consistency with relevant principles or norms. We then offer three contributions to the existing literature. First, we provide a theoretical explanation of how EBA can contribute to good governance by promoting procedural regularity and transparency. Second, we propose seven criteria for how to design and implement EBA procedures successfully. Third, we identify and discuss the conceptual, technical, social, economic, organisational, and institutional constraints associated with EBA. We conclude that EBA should be considered an integral component of multifaced approaches to managing the ethical risks posed by ADMS.

Recent popularity of collaborative tagging as a component of a retrieval system has lead us to study such a system. Similar to text categorization, albeit in a less centralized fashion, collaborative tagging relies on humans to annotate documents with metadata descriptions, i.e. tags. For that reason, this thesis attempts to extend the tagging process to include a more consistent non-human annotations in the form of automatic text categorization. In applying automatic text categorization to collaboratively tagged data, we have created two sets of experiment. The first experiment compares two classification methods, Naive Bayes and Support Vector Machine (SVM) in a straightforward 1-vs. all classification. The results of the comparison allow us to make important observations such as the benefit of using a maximum margin classifiers (SVM) in annotating concepts with skewed document distributions as well as establishing a baseline result. For the second experiment, we have found that the lack of structure in tagging has limited our learning approach to the simple 1-vs. all setting. Inspired by the application of hierarchical categorization in web directories[15], we introduce in our second experiment a categorization approach that automatically builds a hierarchy from the tag space and incorporates it to the training and classification process. Unlike previous hierarchical categorizations that rely on human-generated hierarchies, our hierarchical approach relies on an artificial hierarchy that is created from tag usage analysis. After the method was applied to the dataset, we compared the result of the new methods with the baseline results from the first experiment. Based on that comparison, we observed that our hierarchical approach improves not only on the quality of predictions, but also the efficiency (total training and classification time) of our automatic text categorization system.

Categorization approaches have been effectively applied to chemicals, and many have tried to apply variations of these approaches to nanomaterials. Given the added complexities of nanomaterials, this has been challenging. International cooperation on categorization approaches has been made, primarily through the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Progress has been limited given the complexities of nanomaterials, especially given the need to consider not only the intrinsic properties of the materials but also properties dependent on the system into which it is introduced. Consideration must also be given to the different purposes and contexts, in particular regulatory contexts, to which the categorization schemes would be applied. More progress can be anticipated by focusing on areas of overlap among countries such as physicochemical properties.
