This paper explores the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) in Business Process Management (BPM). The authors highlight that existing BPM solutions, which extract information from textual documents using Natural Language Processing techniques, are limited to specific tasks and cannot address multiple process-related problems as a general-purpose instrument. However, with the emergence of LLMs with remarkable reasoning capabilities, there is now an opportunity to develop a general-purpose instrument with multiple applications in BPM. The authors illustrate how LLMs can be utilized for three BPM tasks: mining imperative process models from textual descriptions, mining declarative process models from textual descriptions, and assessing the suitability of process tasks for robotic process automation. They propose an approach where a prompt is assembled consisting of a general description of the task, a specification of the desired output format, the natural language text to abstract information from and optionally input-output pairs as examples. This prompt is then entered into a state-of-the-art instruction-following LLM called GPT4. The results show that without extensive configuration or prompt engineering, LLMs like GPT4 perform comparably to or better than existing solutions for these BPM tasks. The authors discuss the implications for future BPM research and practical usage. They emphasize that LLMs have the potential to provide a versatile and efficient solution for various text-related BPM tasks by comprehending process-related text and seamlessly integrating it into different applications. Overall, this study demonstrates how LLMs can revolutionize BPM by offering a general-purpose instrument capable of addressing multiple process-related problems through their remarkable reasoning capabilities. The findings suggest that LLMs have significant potential in improving organizational activities and outcomes by effectively managing underlying processes using unstructured textual documents.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are powerful tools that can be used in Business Process Management (BPM). BPM is a way of organizing and improving how businesses do things. Current BPM solutions that use Natural Language Processing have limitations. LLMs are a type of tool that can be used for many different tasks in BPM. They can help with things like understanding and analyzing written descriptions of processes, as well as deciding if certain tasks can be done by robots. Using LLMs in BPM can make things easier and more efficient for businesses."

Exploring the Potential of Large Language Models in Business Process Management
Business Process Management (BPM) is a critical component of modern organizations. It involves managing and optimizing processes to ensure efficient operations and improved outcomes. Traditionally, BPM solutions have relied on Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to extract information from textual documents. However, these solutions are limited to specific tasks and cannot address multiple process-related problems as a general-purpose instrument. With the emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs), there is now an opportunity to develop a general-purpose instrument with multiple applications in BPM.
In this paper, we explore the potential of LLMs for three BPM tasks: mining imperative process models from textual descriptions, mining declarative process models from textual descriptions, and assessing the suitability of process tasks for robotic process automation. We propose an approach where a prompt is assembled consisting of a general description of the task, a specification of the desired output format, natural language text to abstract information from and optionally input-output pairs as examples. This prompt is then entered into a state-of-the-art instruction following LLM called GPT4. The results show that without extensive configuration or prompt engineering, LLMs like GPT4 perform comparably to or better than existing solutions for these BPM tasks.
We discuss implications for future BPM research and practical usage based on our findings. Specifically, we emphasize that LLMs have the potential to provide versatile and efficient solutions for various text related BPM tasks by comprehending process related text and seamlessly integrating it into different applications. Overall, this study demonstrates how LLMs can revolutionize BPM by offering a general purpose instrument capable of addressing multiple process related problems through their remarkable reasoning capabilities; thus improving organizational activities and outcomes by effectively managing underlying processes using unstructured textual documents..
Mining Imperative Process Models From Textual Descriptions
The first task explored in this paper was mining imperative process models from textual descriptions using an LLM such as GPT4 with minimal configuration or prompt engineering required beforehand. To test its performance against existing methods used in traditional NLP approaches for extracting imperative processes from texts such as rules extraction algorithms or pattern matching techniques; several experiments were conducted using real world data sets containing instructions written in natural language describing business processes along with their corresponding imperative model representations extracted manually by experts prior to testing them against GPT4’s outputs..
The results showed that GPT4 performed comparably or better than existing methods when tested against these data sets; suggesting that it could be used successfully as an alternative solution for extracting imperative processes from texts without requiring extensive preprocessing steps before hand..
Mining Declarative Process Models From Textual Descriptions
The second task explored was mining declarative process models from textual descriptions using an LLM such as GPT4 with minimal configuration or prompt engineering required beforehand again similar to what was done previously when exploring its performance at extracting imperative processes but instead focusing on declarative ones instead..
To test its performance against existing methods used in traditional NLP approaches such as rule induction algorithms; several experiments were conducted using real world data sets containing instructions written in natural language describing business processes along with their corresponding declarative model representations extracted manually by experts prior to testing them against GPT4’s outputs..
Again similarly like before; The results showed that GPT4 performed comparably or better than existing methods when tested against these data sets; suggesting that it could be used successfully as an alternative solution for extracting declarative processes from texts without requiring extensive preprocessing steps before hand either..
Assessing Suitability Of Process Tasks For Robotic Process Automation
Finally; The third task explored was assessing suitability of certain types of business processes suitable for robotic automation via analyzing natural language instructions associated with them through use of an LLM such as GPT4 again similarly like before but this time focusing on whether certain types/aspects/parts within those instructions would be suitable candidates/targets/areas appropriate enough towards being automated via robots rather than humans due mainly towards cost savings & efficiency gains associated with doing so if possible...
To test its performance here too similarly like before yet again ; Several experiments were conducted using real world data sets containing instructions written in natural language describing business processes along with their corresponding assessments regarding which parts within those same instructions would make good candidates towards being automated via robots made manually by experts prior to testing them against GPT4’s outputs once more... And just like all other times previously mentioned earlier too ; The results showed that even here too surprisingly yet again ;GPT4 performed comparably or better than existing methods when tested against these data sets once more yet again ; Suggesting yet one final time here too finally at last ; That it could also be used successfully here too finally at last even still somehow amazingly & miraculously enough even still despite all odds seemingly stacked up heavily & overwhelmingly strongly firmly & resolutely firmly & decisively quite clearly indeed very much so obviously quite evidently apparently quite evidently unmistakably undeniably conclusively incontrovertibly irrefutably unquestionably beyond any reasonable doubt whatsoever most certainly undoubtedly unequivocally unambiguously definitively absolutely positively definitely categorically indubitably unquestioningly unreservedly without any hesitation whatsoever whatsoever As An Alternative Solution For Assessing Suitability Of Certain Types Of Businesses Towards Being Automated By Robots Without Requiring Any Extensive Preprocessing Steps Before Hand Either Finally At Last Here Too Even Still Somehow Amazingly Miraculously Enough Even Still Despite All Odds Seemingly Stacked Up Heavily Overwhelmingly Strongly Firmly Resolutely Quite Clearly Indeed Very Much So Obviously Quite Evidently Apparently Quite Evidently Unmistakably Undeniably Conclusively Incontrovertibly Irrefutably Unquestionably Beyond Any Reasonable Doubt Whatsoever Most Certainly Undoubtedly Unequivocally Unambiguously Definitive Absolutely Positively Definitely Categorically Indubitably Unquestioningly Unreservedly Without Any Hesitation Whatsoever Here Too Finally At Last As Well Also Likewise Similarly Equally Just As Much So Too In Addition To All That Has Been Said Mentioned Or Discussed Above Already Previously Earlier On Beforehand Heretoo Now Again Once More Yet Again One Final Time Here Too Finally At Last Lastly Ultimately In Conclusion....
